Protein Concentration

Total salivary protein concentration reflects the composite output of all proteins secreted into the oral cavity and rises inversely with salivary flow rate as dehydration progresses. Walsh et al. (2004) demonstrated strong correlation between salivary protein concentration and exercise-induced dehydration, validating it as a sensitive non-invasive fluid-balance marker. It complements creatinine as a dual-marker hydration assessment in athletic populations.
