Prostaglandin F2-alpha

Prostaglandin F2-alpha (PGF2α) is a cyclopentane-ring eicosanoid synthesised from arachidonic acid via the cyclooxygenase pathway, acting as a potent mediator of inflammation, vasoconstriction, bronchoconstriction, and smooth muscle contraction following tissue injury. Salivary PGF2α is measurable as an index of COX-mediated inflammatory activity in the oral mucosa and systemic tissues, with elevated concentrations reflecting post-exercise tissue damage and arachidonic acid cascade activation. Ricciotti and FitzGerald (2011) comprehensively characterised prostaglandin biology relevant to exercise-induced inflammation.
